BOOK, BOOK, BOOK–OOK

ANGST, AGIDA, and AGE–APPROPRIATE WORDS from WORKSHOPS at 826 VALENCIA. Kids write, SUBJECT-OBJECT SETS.

So the relationship with 826 VALENCIA GROWS stronger and stronger. The kids’ newspapers continue, but we can add BOOKS to the LIST of COLLABORATIONS with the now VENERABLE MISSION INSTITUTION. Expect a bumper crop of CHAPBOOKS born out of WORKSHOPS, CAMPS, and IN–SCHOOL PROJECTS with kids from 6 to 16. The material ranges from tempered first steps into WRITING, to angst–riddled SPOKEN WORD POETRY. The work involves ILLUSTRATION, TYPESETTING (YEAH!), and CREATING or RE–WORKING TEMPLATES. SUBJECT-OBJECT HAS GONE RETAIL. ALTHOUGH, TO BE HONEST, WAS THERE REALLY EVER A LACK OF RETAIL?

SUBJECT-OBJECT WENT RETAIL! Well, sort of. On a rainy day a couple weeks back, the RISD ALUMNI SALE was held at FORT MASON in SAN FRANCISCO and SUBJECT-OBJECT had a few EXPERIMENTS and TRINKETS for sale at a table near good friends, DESIGN.DES-TROY.COM, who, by the way, still have a new bumper crop of HOLIDAY CARDS available at ETSY.COM. On offer were a couple PILLOW COVERS sourced from NEW OLD STOCK VINTAGE FABRICS, one featuring an ARABIC ILLUMINATED SCRIPT. This is also your FIRST GLIMPSE of a POSSIBLE WEST COAST OUTPOST for SUBJ-OBJ.

INSPIRED by the “GOING AWAY” CARD featured in the PREVIOUS POST, a SMALL SERIES of POLITICALLY INCORRECT POLITICALLY CORRECT TYPOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS emerged as a NEW BODY of WORK. See if you can find “PAPER KILLER,” “PAPER CUT,” and other WORDPLAY. As always, THANKS FOR BROWSING.

SAILORS AND SEA MONSTERS, OH MY!

SEA MONSTERS, SEA OTTERS, SEAFARING SUPPLIES FOR PIRATES, KIDS, CUBED ROOTS, FRACTIONS, AND BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS AT 826 VALENCIA.

 

It can’t be said that putting KIDS’ NEWSPAPERS and NEWSLETTERS together is generally a designer’s favorite project. But we all have those GEEK-OUT MOMENTS when we enter “THE ZONE.” You know exactly what that means : LINE WEIGHTS are JUST SO; all the RAGS and RIVERS are FILLED OUT; and EVERYTHING, for lack of a better expression, IS “TIGHT!” Not to mention, DOING IT ALL for a GOOD CAUSE is JUST CHERRY. Designer/writer DAVE EGGERS’s and Ninive Caligari’s venerable EDUCATION PROGRAM, 826 NATIONAL, and in this specific case, 826 VALENCIA in SAN FRANCISCO, uses a variety of media to TEACH and ENGAGE local communities in READING, WRITING, and PUBLISHING. Students and future writers are TUTORED and MENTORED by the organization through a BOAT-LOAD network of VOLUNTEERS, including yours truly. TO DATE, you’re seeing a COUPLE ISSUES of THE BAYFARER paper and a ‘ZINE. As might be expected in an organization so positively motivated, it’s sad to see  a member of the fold leave.But CHERYLLE is heading back to school, and this LITTLE CARD/POSTER was an IMPROMPTU way to say “SMOOTH SAILING, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!”
